Ort im land der Ideen - Winner of the 2006 Competition
Museum for Sepulchral Culture Kassel
The initiative of the Federal Government and the German economy, which is under the patronage of the former Federal President Horst Köhler, announced a competition in 2006 to find an imaginative place in Germany for every day of the year 2006.
The Museum for Sepulchral Culutre was awarded the "Selected Landmark 2006" from 1200 applicants by the initiative "Germany - Land of Ideas". This is not only a tribute to the work, but also proof that the theme of dying, death and mourning has meanwhile found its place in the cultural landscape. The 365 selected locations formed the largest series of events for innovation, courage and curiosity ever held in Germany. Each selected institution presented itself on one day in 2006: The Museum für Sepulkralkultur presented itself to the public on Death Sunday in a ceremony during which the award "Place in the Land of Ideas" was officially presented. Bertram Hilgen, Lord Mayor of the City of Kassel, paid tribute to the work of the museum in his speech. The museum is an important source of impetus, especially in times when commercialisation and the "stinginess is horny" mentality also affected the last things.
