BEING SEEN

Memorial service for lonely deceased

As soon as we come into this world, it is indispensable for our existence to be seen by others. Loving glances from parents are at the beginning, but how do we depart from this world? How has our existence been perceived by individuals or the society we have enriched with our work? Is there a prestige to be gained? Is it a gift or hard to earn?

Every year several dozen people die in our city of Kassel without relatives accompanying them out of life or taking care of their burial. The number of Ordnungsamt funerals has increased steadily in recent decades because more and more people have no relatives. Thus, the organization of the so-called last things becomes an act that the municipality has to manage.

Through an initiative of the Heilhaus, the Protestant Church as well as the Museum for Sepulchral Culture, the city of Kassel could be won over to facilitate a memorial service for those who have died alone. This will take place for the first time on April 29 at 5 p.m. in the Museum for Sepulchral Culture. In the coming years it will be organized at different locations of the current and future cooperation partners.

The aim of the event is to bring back into the circle of society, through a common ritual, those who fell out of it during their lifetime and in their death. The memorial service aims to bring about a respect for the unseen by looking as a community at what has been lost to us.

The commemoration will be musically accompanied by Klaus-Dieter Ammerbach (bassoon) and Regine von Lühmann (harp). Afterwards we invite you to a common conclusion in the cafeteria. The event is open to the public.

Why more and more people die lonely

hessenschau

No family, no gravestone, no name: More and more people are dying without relatives being able to take care of their burial. This is taken care of by the public order office. In Kassel, a memorial service for those who died alone has now taken place for the first time.
