Grief songwriting workshop with Alex Peppler

Even in ancient Greece, people expressed their thoughts on the loss of a loved one musically in so-called threnos, a form of lament. Whether the song chosen for the farewell ceremony of a loved one or cultural events such as the jazz funerals in New Orleans - even today, music still seems to play an important role in funeral culture. But can music also help in the grieving process beyond the actual act of saying goodbye?

Musicians such as Neil Young (Tonight's the Night, 1975), Joni Mitchell (Hejira, 1976), Mount Eerie (A Crow Looked at Me, 2017) and Nick Cave (Ghosteen, 2019) have dedicated entire albums to their losses and provided a deep insight into their own grieving processes. The often almost fundamentally different artistic approaches allow exciting conclusions to be drawn about how grief can be expressed individually.

We also want to address the topic of mourning in a series of songwriting workshops, to which we cordially invite you. Under the guidance of Alex Peppler, lyrics will be created that can deal with loss, farewell, but also beautiful memories. Alex has been active as a musician in various constellations for 17 years and released his debut album One Night of Time in 2023. He has also been working as a music coach for several years.

The workshop series

In three consecutive sessions, Alex offers a safe space in which the focus is on having fun learning, exploring and expressing yourself. Recording songs is also possible, but not a must. Please note that the workshops take place as consecutive dates and that you should be present on at least two of the three dates. Only the last date on 29 March 2025 will take place at the Museum for Sepulchral Culture.

Dates

The workshop will take place on the following dates:

Saturday, 1 February 2025, 10.30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Saturday, 1 March 2025, 10.30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Saturday, 29 March 2025, 10.30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Venue

The first two dates will take place in the new Karo-Café of the Schlachthof cultural centre at Karolinenstraße 22, the last date in the Museum for Sepulchral Culture at Weinbergstraße 25-27.
