"Trauerdruck" traditionally refers to the announcements, mourning cards and thank-you notes following a death. These classic cards, often in black and white and designed with Christian motifs, are still an important part of our mourning culture today. This form of mourning print does not usually offer much space for individual creativity.
We have therefore chosen a slightly different approach in our mourning print workshop with Susanne Stein. Whether motifs of remembrance or an expression of their own feelings – together with Susanne, the participants develop their own personal motifs, which are then carved and printed on linoleum plates. In addition to the personalised prints to take home, flags were created from the individual motifs together with the participants in previous workshops.
One of the flags was given to the Museum for Sepulchral Culture for the exhibition dazwischen 2.0, while the other is to be displayed together with the participants at Kassel's main cemetery near the wind telephone. The aim is not only to raise public awareness of an important topic, but also to give participants the opportunity to metaphorically hand over their grief to the wind.
