Who's coming to pick me up when the time comes? In our special exhibition What Does Death Cost?, one section is devoted to the personification of death. In a special guided tour, Cornelia Götschel will take visitors on a journey through representations of ‘death’ in pop culture.
In the manga and anime series Death Note, it is the character Ryuk, a shinigami (god of death), who interferes in people's destinies out of boredom. Ereshkigal comes from Mesopotamian mythology and appears in the anime game series Fate. She is the queen of the underworld, the land of the dead. Whether it's Ryuk, Ereshkigal, Death from the Sandman comics or Hades from the Disney film Hercules – why do we want to give ‘death’ a form at all? What ideas are there about this?
Death as an inevitable part of life and the diverse ideas about its form, tasks and even its character are intended to encourage visitors to reflect and create their own personifications. Ultimately, that is what it is all about: the question of how you imagine ‘death’. Let your imagination run wild – our guided tour gives you a special opportunity to do just that.
