On February 26, 2020, § 217 was overturned by the Federal Constitutional Court. Previously, § 217 prohibited the businesslike promotion of assisted suicide. The fact that this is now permitted requires, among other things, new legislation regulating who and under what circumstances people can access this type of euthanasia.
Prof. Dr. Andreas Lob-Hüdepohl is Professor of Theological Ethics and a member of the German Ethics Council.
