Hardly anyone dies anymore, everyone "passes away". The nobler formula is supposed to keep us away from the bitter truth of death. But you can "take poison on it" that we all have to "bite the dust", "look at the radishes from below", "have the light of life blown out", "lie six feet lower" and "kick the bucket".
Rolf-Bernhard Essig, "the Indiana Jones of linguistic treasures" (Nürnberger Nachrichten), is not only linguistically familiar with death. In this varied program, the entertainer, historian and German scholar presents us with little stories about the end of life and sheds light on the many, many idioms that have to do with death and dying. The best part: afterwards, you can ask the expert questions to your heart's content - including about other proverbs.
Dr. phil. Rolf-Bernhard Essig lives in Bamberg and travels all over Germany with his language columns, exhibitions and programs. The author of numerous non-fiction books and narrative texts for children, young people and adults, he attaches particular importance to imparting knowledge in a way that is both scientifically correct and enjoyable. Most recently published: "Dr. Essig's Proverb Pharmacy. Für alle Lebenslagen" (Herder Verlag) and "Ach, wie gut, dass niemand weiß ... Sprichwörtliches aus dem Märchenreich" (Duden).
