documenta fifteen

Museum für Sepulkralkultur is location of documenta fifteen

From June 18 to September 25, 2022, documenta fifteen will take place at various locations in Kassel under the artistic direction of ruangrupa. The Jakarta-based collective has based the fifteenth edition of documenta on the values and ideas of lumbung, the Indonesian term for a communal rice barn. As an artistic and economic model, lumbung is based on principles such as collectivity, communal resource building, and equitable distribution, and is realized in all areas of collaboration and exhibition conception.

Iumbung will be the collaborative practice of ruangrupa and the artistic team, lumbung member and lumbung artists*, and all participants on the way to documenta fifteen in 2022 and beyond.

In the context of documenta fifteen, Kassel's industrial east will for the first time increasingly be the focus of a documenta: in the Bettenhausen district, which is characterized by extensive factory and commercial areas, there is a large exhibition complex for documenta fifteen with the HÜBNER GmbH & Co KG site and the nearby Hallenbad Ost. From the city center with the ruruHaus as the starting point and living room of documenta fifteen as well as Fridericianum, documenta Halle, Natural History Museum in the Ottoneum, GRIMMWELT and Museum for Sepulcral Culture, documenta fifteen stretches across the Fulda towards the east.

What's to be seen?

For documenta fifteen, the Mexican artist Erick Beltrán, who lives and works in Barcelona, Spain, addresses the power mechanisms that define, evaluate, classify, reproduce, and disseminate images and discourses. Together with a local research group, he addresses the question “What is power?” and presents the results in the form of a large-format installation with prints and sculptures. Hamja Ahsan’s Halal Fried Chicken shop signs are visible in this as well as seven other venues of documenta fifteen, mapping aspects of Islamic history, diasporic urban fast-food subcultures, and colonial past.

The governing body of documenta fifteen is documenta und Museum Fridericianum gGmbH with the shareholders City of Kassel and State of Hesse.

Sponsored by the German Federal Cultural Foundation.

Sponsored by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM).

The lumbung network is sponsored by Goethe-Institut.

Mai partners of the documenta fifteen: Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe, Volkswagen AG
