ENRIQUE METINIDES

The Spectacle of the Real

A photo exhibition in cooperation with the Kasseler Fotoforum

In cooperation with the Kasseler Fotoforum, the Museum for Sepulchral Culture is presenting the first solo exhibition of Mexican photographer Enrique Metinides in Germany ever – fitting in with Kassel’s International Photo Book Festival this year (June 1-5, 2011) with the main theme "The Latin American Photo Book".

Enrique Metinides (* February 12, 1934 in Mexico City) is a Mexican photographer, internationally known for his frequently shocking pictures. He took gripping pictures of crimes, murders, plane crashes and other catastrophes from 1949 to 1979 for the horrifying news of Mexican tabloids.

The fascination of these photographs lies in their incredulity, the scenes seem staged like a historical painting and unsettle the viewer in an unexpected way. Today, his works are shown in numerous galleries and exhibitions worldwide.

The exhibition at the Museum for Sepulchral Culture includes approximately 70 large-format photographs.

Kuratiert von Veronique Ricardoni (Mexiko), Michael Wiedemann und Dieter Neubert (Kasseler Fotoforum) mit Unterstützung der Garash Galeria (Mexiko).
