Re:View

By teenagers for teenagers

As part of the new "Re:View" project, young people were invited to engage with the museum's themes and collection. This is because children's and youth work in particular now accounts for a third of the museum's offerings; however, this focus is not yet visible in the current permanent exhibition. To remedy this situation and prepare for better integration of content for young people, content was created by and for the age group 8 to 18. In a peer-to-peer approach, young people tell others in their age group more about the topic of the finiteness of life, share their experiences, opinions and develop ideas about it.

The first project steps for "Re:View" were carried out in cooperation with the Martin Luther King School in Kassel. Initial agreements with social workers and teachers were made in October 2022. As a vocational school, the Martin Luther King School offers students the transition to vocational training. Through contact with the school social worker, a class of 16 students aged 15 to 18 was recruited for the project. Due to the social disadvantages of many of the students, the individual support of the young people is a special concern of the school. The families of the participants in "Re:View!" have mostly immigrated to Germany. Some of the students have experienced flight.

In addition to the internal museum educator, a media educator and a theater educator with appropriate expertise were involved in the project from the beginning in order to develop their own mediation formats. The external theater pedagogical support proved to be extremely helpful and indispensable in the development of short stories and story boards for the selected collection items and in the performative implementation. It contributed to the fact that cultural and biographical references of the young people were given a broad scope during the concrete implementation in January 2023.

The external media pedagogical support also enabled the participants to develop their own perspectives and interpretations of the exhibits on film. The media competencies, which were taught in a separate workshop within the project, related to the independent use and reception of the media used. The focus was not only on the use and handling of digital media, but also on the passive reception of media.

After all, dealing with social media in particular requires a certain degree of safety and circumspection, since a large part of young people's social interaction takes place on such platforms; here, the issue of self-expression is highly relevant, as are problems such as bullying.

The "Re:View" project builds on the previous project "Rethink, Rebuild, Restart!" in terms of "opening up new digital outreach possibilities." In this project, a new infrastructure in the digital environment was created in 2021 in order to accompany, among other things, the redesign of the Museum for Sepulchral Culture planned for 2024-2026 together with interested parties. The museum was completely reconstructed as a 3D model and the collection holdings have been continuously 3D scanned since 2021 and made available to all users. In this way, exhibitions can be built in the virtual museum, new objects can be added to the collection and feedback can be left or we can be contacted directly.
