Students design shrouds

Students of the Goethe-Gymnasium in Kassel design shrouds

The fact that students in grade 9 spent several weeks designing shrouds for the dead may at first seem a bit irritating. But if you take a closer look at the design of shrouds, you will quickly realize that the last shirt is a very special piece of clothing.

A deceased person wears it on his skin. No other object is as close to him as this garment. It covers him, while in it he shows himself one last time to the people who were closest to him. Perhaps it will be the last image they will remember of him. The situation is also not repeatable and therefore requires empathy and the greatest care in its preparation. And the young people literally understood this when dealing with the textile collection items.

After an initial visit to the museum in June and a lesson at school, the 16 students designed and made individual shrouds in small groups. In doing so, they not only expressed their personal wishes and tastes. In their concepts, they also made references to the countries from which their families had immigrated, because many of the students have an immigrant background and thus a special view of different traditions.
