Planning and Design of Cemeteries

Only if a cemetery is also an attractive place, it can play an important role in mourning and commemoration and will be used in the long term. Therefore, it is necessary for cemetery owners to think about the qualities of the cemeteries they manage and to actively promote them, or to create them in the first place. Also shifts in the number of grave beards towards more urn burials and a demand for so-called low-maintenance graves require new concepts for planning in order to integrate these developments into the existing cemeteries in a meaningful way.

The Study Group offers information and advice in this regard. At the beginning there is a cemetery inspection, in which information about essential qualities of a cemetery is given and the cemetery situation on site is analysed. Afterwards, a written elaboration of the most important points concerning the respective cemetery will be prepared, which will serve as a guideline for changes to be made. By agreement parts of plans as well as statements can be worked out with regard to a development concept for a cemetery.

In order to get such developments going, the citizens and the trades involved in the cemetery need to be informed. For this purpose, the advisory department of the working group offers lectures on the subject of cemetery culture.

General information

Providing well-founded and practice-oriented information on all questions of funeral and cemetery culture is one of the original tasks of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft friedhof und Denkmal (Study Group Cemetery and Monument).

Cemetery owners and administrations are advised as well as tradespeople, cultural institutions and private individuals. The spectrum ranges from design recommendations and legal advice to cemetery planning.

At the same time, the working group develops guidelines and recommendations that are intended to lead to a sustainable funeral culture oriented towards the requirements of the present and communicates them to a broad public. Lectures, seminars and further training events serve this purpose.

On request, it also offers further consulting by our staff or establishes contacts with other experts.
