THE MUSEUM The only museum dedicated to sepulchral culture is located in Kassel. For more than 30 years, it has fulfilled a vital social mission: raising awareness about dying, death, grief, and burial. The museum is a place of community, offering diverse approaches to sepulchral culture – academic, aesthetic, practical, emotional, and participatory. With its prominent location on the Weinberg hill, the museum, together with the neighboring Grimm World, has long been one of Kassel's urban planning and architectural landmarks.
THE CHALLENGE The Museum of Sepulchral Culture building is in dire need of renovation. The roof leaks, the ventilation system is beyond repair, the heating is broken, important pipes are dilapidated, the walls are damp, and mold is growing. Without renovation, the museum cannot continue operating in the long term.
The permanent exhibition It is outdated: cultural diversity, accessibility, and a connection to contemporary sepulchral culture are only partially present. If the museum is to continue serving our society, it needs essential public funding.
THE GOAL The Museum for Sepulchral Culture must remain Kassel's leading institution, radiating its influence throughout Germany and Europe. The dialogue about mortality should continue – pluralistically, multiculturally, in a contemporary and accessible manner. The museum must undergo a sustainable and comprehensive renovation and expansion, and be made future-proof with a newly conceived permanent exhibition.
