More freedom in the future? The new burial laws and their impact on cemeteries.
Last year and this year, three German states amended their burial laws: Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony-Anhalt, and Hesse. In all three cases, the changes resulted in a liberalization of regulations. Furthermore, Saxony is expected to significantly accommodate secular burial preferences in a predominantly religious cemetery landscape. Other states are currently revising their burial laws.
How will the legislative changes affect the work of cemeteries? This question will be addressed at the Cemetery Administrators' Conference on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at the Museum for Sepulchral Culture in Kassel, through a series of expert presentations. In addition to practical examples from cemeteries in German-speaking countries, the conference will also examine other European countries where this liberalization has already taken place. The aim is to discuss current developments in the cemetery sector through professional exchange and to explore different perspectives.
