It was one of the first grave markers created in the emerging artists' necropolis in September 1992: Timm Ulrichs' Upside-Down Hollow Body Monument II. The artist passed away at the beginning of May – therefore, we are dedicating this public tour to him. Gerold Eppler will guide you through the permanent exhibition.
Timm UlrichsBorn in March 1941, he worked as a conceptual artist in both multimedia and performance art. As a self-proclaimed "total artist," he spectacularly displayed his personal awareness of mortality. In 1977, he walked through a thunderstorm with a copper rod strapped to his back. In 1981, he had himself locked inside a hollowed-out boulder for ten hours, and since 1981, the tattoo "THE END" has adorned his right eyelid. In 1992, a bronze cast of the artist's body was buried upside down on the edge of the Blue Lake. Viewers' eyes are drawn through the soles of the feet into the interior of the figure. The bronze casing of the tomb thus encloses the space the artist occupied when his body was cast. After the artist's death, the sculpture is intended to contain his ashes.
