International Museum Day 2021

May 16, 2021 is International Museum Day!

International Museum Day will take place for the 44th time in 2021. The aim of this day is to draw attention to the thematic diversity of the more than 6,500 museums in Germany and museums worldwide. The guiding principle of the Museum Day is therefore Museums Discovered. With their broad spectrum, diverse offerings and innovative ideas, museums make a great contribution to our cultural and social life. As a visitor, you are cordially invited to discover the treasures preserved in the museums and to be inspired by the passionate commitment of the museum staff.

The day of action is proclaimed annually by the International Council of Museums ICOM and is highlighted by a different theme from museum work. In 2021, the focus will be Museums Inspire the Future.

In Germany, International Museum Day is coordinated by the German Museums Association (Deutscher Museumsbund e. V.) and implemented in close cooperation with the museum associations and offices of the federal states, ICOM Germany, and local museums. The action day is decisively supported by the foundations and institutes of the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe.

The patronage for Museum Day is assumed by the President of the Bundesrat.

Education

The use of digital technologies in education can be more than just entertainment: together with tasks that appeal to different types of learners, they enable active and exploratory learning in the museum – without losing sight of the fun.

With the social media campaigns for International Museum Day, we want to provide ideas and impulses for new forms of mediation in the museum. To this end, we present new formats, apps and tools, offer handouts, explain in podcasts and invite people to participate.
